The Department of Environmental Science was originated from Environmental Engineering Major founded in 1986 in the primitive Chongqing University. The department of Environmental Science now belongs to College of Environment and Ecology. Based on the State Key Laboratory of Coal Mine Disaster Dynamics and Control, and the Key Laboratory of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region's Eco-Environment, Ministry of Education, the department of Environment Science have a complete disciplinary support system and was the national "211 Project", "985 Project" key construction discipline. The department obtained the authorization of Master Degree in Environmental Engineering in 1987, Doctor Degree in Environmental engineering in 2002, Doctor Degree in Environmental Science and Engineering in 2005, and postdoctoral research station in Environmental Science and Engineering in 2007. In 2017, the department was approved as Chongqing "Three Special Action Plan" "Safety and Environment" multi-discipline group project. In 2021, Environmental Science was awarded as the first-class major by Chongqing Municipal Education Commission. The department of Environmental Science has now faculty of 15 and more than 95% have doctoral degree. Since 2015, the faculty has been continuously strengthened, attracting outstanding talents from Peking University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Beijing Normal University and other top 30 universities all over the world. Thanks to the effort of more than 35 years of the whole faculty, the department of Environmental Science have formed unique scientific research characters in environmental management and assessment, water pollution and prevention, atmospheric pollution and control.
