On December 3, 2021, the College of Environment and Ecology held the 2021 Symposium on Environmental Governance and Ecological Restoration (2021 SEGER). Nearly 60 experts, scholars and professionals from 12 countries including China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and Japan, etc., gathered in the online live broadcast room to share and discussed the latest academic trends in the field of environment and ecology.
Professor Qiang He, Dean of the College of Environment and Ecology, speaking at the opening ceremony, noted that China had become more involved in global ecological and environmental governance in recent years, playing a key role in addressing climate change, avoiding pollution, and conserving ecological diversity. The goal of 2021 SEGER is to create a forum for researchers and engineers from different countries to share cutting-edge innovations and improve understanding and cooperation. Professor Chun Yang, Vice Dean of the College of Environment and Ecology, and Dr. Xiaoming Wang, Director of the Office of Talent Recruitment and International Affairs, co-hosted the symposium.
Subsequently, 18 internationally well-known scholars gave a series of presentations. These scholars included Prof. Morton A. Barlaz, Dean of Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, North Carolina State University, USA; Prof. Scott Smith, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada; Prof. Keilor Rojas Jimenez, University of Costa Rica; and Jan Vymazal, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague; Prof. Helene Roux de Balmann, French National Centre for Scientific Research; Andreas Schäffer, Professor and Chair, Institute for Environmental Research, RWTH Aachen University, Germany; and Prof. Camille Petit, Imperial College London, UK, Prof. Martina Roß-Nickoll, Institute for Environmental Research, RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and Prof. Jacek Makinia, Gdansk University of Technology, Poland, etc. The presentations covered research directions including waste and wastewater treatment, wetland protection, environmental management, greenhouse gas emissions, new pollutants, carbon footprint, etc. During the symposium, participants actively participated in the discussion, and engaged in in-depth academic exchanges.
Last, the participants agreed that the symposium provided a high-quality academic sharing and communication opportunity, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the experts for their excellent presentations and the host organization's arrangements, and expressed hope that future exchanges and cooperation between scholars from various countries shall be continually strengthened, and that joint efforts for global ecological environment protection are well needed.
